Read this great article by Ryan Fuller on Slate. I love the quote,"In teaching, a person can be extremely competent, work tirelessly, and still fail miserably, especially in the first few years."http://www.slate.com/articles/life/education/2013/12/teaching_in_america_s_highest_need_communities_isn_t_rocket_science_it_s.2.html
I really enjoyed reading that article too. It's funny that I was just thinking about it this week as I was moving from thinking about comparing complex poetry to untangling a social issue between students to figuring out the best way to teach some new science content.
ReplyDeleteI hope your school year is going well. What are you teaching right now?
Hi Emily, happy to hear from you. I am reading Bud, Not buddy with my fifth graders. My 4th graders are doing an author study on Patricia Polacco. She is a great resource for teaching writing. In Massachusetts our state test involves a lengthy writing test which is usually a personal narrative. I also got a grant for The Walking Classroom (mp3 players which come with many lessons downloaded) which I'll blog about soon. Christine
