My school incorporates balanced literacy with the common core. We rewrote our curriculum maps to match the core standards and our social studies curriculum. I have to say that in my room the students are learning and understanding more--their reading is more critical and they're able to effectively analyze difficult texts. In guided reading, I covered the reading skills within fictional texts and the students still independently read their just-right books. I'm happy to be adapting to the common core standards and I think our children will benefit as well :o)
