The entire story, Everglades, by Jean Craighead George, is in the fifth grade Trophies anthology. I found a great Storyworks resource to accompany the story. http://storyworks.scholastic.com/reproducible-archive/november-december-2010 The magazine article , Monsters of the Everglades, can be shown on the Smartboard. The website also has a great short video about invasive species in other places in the US. Storyworks provides worksheets and tests as well. After visiting this website, I am considering buying a subscription for the next school year.
If you don't follow Mary Blow from Scholastic Top Teaching, here is a link to her post. She has a great post on the Storyworks site.

This is a vocabulary lesson from the story, Everglades, that I like to use. These words are all synonyms used on page 257 for a large amount. You could also use a linear array to list the words in a different way. Christine

Thanks for the tip about Storyworks! I looked at the information from Mary Blow's post that you referenced and I'm inspired to check out this awesome resource!
ReplyDeleteYour welcome!I think the Storyworks site may be making the articles password protected in January. Christine
ReplyDeleteHi Everyone. At this time, they have not password protected the supplemental web site. However, I understand that it will be password protected in the near future to adhere to copyright.
ReplyDeleteI am curious about your reading program. These stories from "Trophies", are they short stories from a text book? Or are they trade books that go along with a unit? I am trying to incorporate a reading workshop approach alongside my Basel reader and am wondering if this is what you do. Thanks for you input:)
ReplyDeleteDo you have anything for William Shakespeare & The Globe or The World of William Joyce Scrapbook. If you do where do you find it.
